to the Discovering Dickens Project
Discovering Dickens began in 2002 as
a small project
devoted to introducing the Stanford community to the fascination
of serial reading, as well as to the more measured pace of large
Victorian novels released over time. But Discovering
Dickens didn’t
stay small; by the end of the first year, the project
had more than
7000 subscribers, 7 times what any of us had predicted.
In 2005, the serial reading of Hard Times again
invites you
to rediscover the more leisurely, and more engaged,
virtues of Victorian
serial publication. Each issue, both in paper copy and
on the website,
is accompanied by notes, as well as by contemporary
maps and illustrations,
that we hope will make the text more accessible and
more immediate
to the 21st-century reader. Your gift will help sustain
this project,
by defraying some of the costs of printing and mailing.
