Chips: A Lesson in Multiplication
This short piece, published June 10, 1854, discusses population
growth and density in Great Britain, taking the optimistic point
of view that "increase of population give an irresistible
impulse to increase of knowledge and happiness." This position
opposes the Malthusian theories that were under discussion at
the time and to which Hard Times alludes repeatedly.
("Chips" was the title that Household Words
used for shorter articles, to distinguish them from the longer
essays that predominated in the journal.)
